If your outdoor decorating style leans toward the classic, whimsical or historic, then let the Crystal Palace be your inspiration. Located in Southeast London, the Crystal Palace served as the grounds for the Great Exhibition of 1851, and was a large, majestic glass structure with cast iron frame components that were based on greenhouse designs.
Although the Crystal Palace burned down in 1936, aspects of its charm have survived and can still be found throughout the Crystal Palace Park’s 200 acre grounds. Take a virtual trip to the Crystal Palace below, and see how you can replicate its unique style in your own outdoor space.
Known as Dinosaur Court, the dinosaur sculptures of Crystal Palace were first unveiled in 1854, and have since been repeatedly restored over the years. The sculptures aren’t just of dinosaurs — there’s also extinct animals from various geological ages.
Recreate the look of Dinosaur Court‘s ancient reptiles with a turtle planter.
The grounds also feature a sphinx statue, which is the inspiration for the classic sitting lion statue that is so prevalent in modern-day statuary designs. Our lion garden statue is reminiscent of the regal sphinx style, and a matching set is the perfect way to decorate an outdoor entryway.
During the 19th century, the interior of the Crystal Palace was home to numerous beautiful Greek statues, like the “Girl Bearing Fruit” shown in the black and white photos below. Bring a touch of Grecian elegance and grace to your outdoor living space or garden with one or more pieces from our Four Seasons Garden Statue collection.
Along with statuary, the Crystal Palace also showcased flowers in magnificent urns with intricate carved details. Like the historic urn to the left that depicts a celebration, our selection of urns and planters echoes this Greek style, such as the Classical Dancers Outdoor Garden Urn, which is shown in an aged Relic Lava finish.
Angels were a prevalent theme in the statuary on display at the Crystal Palace, such as the far right image, and they remain a popular presence in today’s outdoor living rooms. See more religious statues here.
One of the most popular and widely recognized figures in classical mythology, Cupid is often portrayed with his bow and arrow. Our selection of statues and fountains features Cupid and other cherubs in the classical Renaissance art style, similar to the Crystal Palace statue to the far left.
Wall plaques add dimension and beauty to bare walls. Below are the Matching Vatican Angels Left and Right Wall Plaques, and the Crystal Palace’s angel atop a lion wall plague.
Tiered fountains create a serene park-like setting in your home or garden area. The Crystal Palace was designed to have the feel of a giant greenhouse, with several massive indoor elm trees, large bushes and hundreds of plants.
A tiered finial fountain with a basin was located at the center of the building, and was a beloved fixture of the building. Replicate its serene beauty with a tiered fountain in your own yard or garden.
